What is Mineral Boost?
Mineral Boost is an animal remedy specifically designed to be added to animals’ diets to overcome shortfalls in calcium, magnesium and sodium. The product is a blend of finely-ground, high-quality components which have been granulated for convenience of use and to ensure accurate distribution through feeds. Granulation has the added advantage of making Mineral Boost dust-free, greatly enhancing animal acceptance.
Methods of application
- Added to bulk feed – Mineral Boost can be added to palm kernel or palm kernel blends at point of dispatch and at the rate required by the farmer.
- Added to maize silage – Mineral Boost can be added to feed rations such as maize silage to be fed on-farm. Because it is pre-blended, free-flowing and dust-free, adding Mineral Boost is very simple process.
- Shed feeding systems – Because Mineral Boost is completely granular, it assists feed flow rather than inhibiting it, an obvious advantage with shed feeding systems.
- Feeding neat – Where animals are not receiving supplementary feeds but require additional calcium, magnesium or sodium in their diets, Mineral Boost can be given neat in paddocks. Because it is granulated, Mineral Boost does not need blending, does not segregate or blow away and, because it contains salt, animals will seek it out and ingest it freely without danger of overdose.
Why use Mineral Boost?
Animal diet supplements such as palm kernel and maize silage have well-documented mineral deficiencies, most notably Ca, Mg, and Na. Overcoming these mineral shortfalls is crucial if we wish to maximize the benefits of using diet supplements and, at the same time, avoid animal metabolic issues. Growing animals and milking cows may need these mineral when grazing pasture and Mineral Boost is ideal for paddock trough-feeding neat.
Because it comes in granulated form, Mineral Boost has a number of distinct advantages over other mineral adding techniques. These include:
- The exact measure of each mineral is distributed evenly throughout the feed ration
- Mineral Boost is dust-free and consequently does not detract from animal acceptance
- Mineral Boost is easy to handle, blend and measure
- Mineral Boost aids the flow-ability of feed rations fed trough shed feeding systems.
What ration is required for different stock classes?
- Milking cows – 100 to 300 grams per cow per day
- Growing stock – 100 grams per animal per day
Blending rates with palm kernel and maize silage
When adding Mineral Boost to palm kernel off the farm, it is best added at a rate of 10% of the feed ration. This ratio works well when cows are receiving up to 3kgs of palm kernel each per day. If cows are getting more than 3kg per day, the ratio can be adjusted accordingly.
The same rule of thumb applies when blending Mineral Boost with maize silage. It should be blended at 10% when feeding up to 3 kg per cow per day and then adjusted down for rations over this amount.
Cost
It is expected that Mineral Boost will retail at around $500 per tonne when purchased in bulk. This would mean if Palm Kernel retails at $300 per tonne adding Mineral Boost will add $20.00 per tonne to the cost to the farmer. This equates to an additional 4 cents per cow per day when feeding 2kg per day of Palm Kernel.
